One of the most common questions I get is “If I’m addicted to soda, such as Diet Coke, how can I do Keto?”. As with any addiction, you need 21 days to break the habit and you need a substitution. If you read my book, the KetoMad Diet, you’ll learn that I was totally addicted to Diet Coke in my teen years. I know how good it can be, that ice cold fizzy goodness. I even drank it in the shower in the morning because I loved the contrast of the hot water and the cold soda. Maybe it’s not diet soda, maybe it is sugar soda. Either way, you can kick the habit.
Is Diet Soda Ok On Keto?
That depends. The first question you should ask is what is it sweetened with? For example, Diet Coke is sweetened with Aspartame which contains Phenylalanine. Many studies have linked aspartame to serious health problems, such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s disease, seizures, stroke, dementia, intestinal dysbiosis, mood disorders, headaches and migraines. The only two sweeteners I use are Stevia and Monk Fruit. Stevia and Monk Fruit do not increase blood sugar, they taste good, and they do not have side effects.
Sodas You Can Buy
There are three brands of soda using the above sweeteners. Zevia, Virgil’s, and Live Soda in that order. Zevia has the most flavors and tastes best to me but of course, it is a personal preference.
Make Your Own
The benefits of making your own “soda” are saving money, convenience, and tailoring it to your taste. This recipe can be changed to suit your taste but this is what I use. Not only does it satisfy the soda craving it adds the additional benefits of suppressing appetite and balancing electrolytes as well as rehydrating us.
If you are addicted to soda this recipe can help you break the habit.
- 1 Tablespoon Raw Apple Cider Vinegar
- 5 Drops Alcohol-Free Stevia
- Pinch of Pink Himalayan Salt
- 12 Ounces Sparkling Water, such as Pellegrino
Directions: If ingredients are not chilled fill a large glass with ice. Pour all ingredients over ice and stir well. If ingredients are chilled simply pour into a large glass and stir well. Enjoy!
